Update the Soundtrack at Car Shows

Should Music Be Used to Attract Younger Car Show Enthusiasts?

September 20, 2021 by Jonatha Whaley

When she was 8, my daughter heard a Mustang close-up for the first time. She turned to me, eyes wide, “that car just growled!” Just like that, a car lover was born.

The sound of a roaring engine, sleek designs, crisp interiors, music wafting from nearby speakers—the makings of a picture-perfect day. The problem is, there are few younger people in the crowd.

One reason for this may be the traditional car show atmosphere. Music played at events is often classic tunes. We’re talking about the good ol’ oldies like “Mustang Sally” and “Little Deuce Coupe.”

Many car connoisseurs grew up listening to this music. Playing it at a car show offers a taste of nostalgia. Those memories should be recognized and honored.

But many from the younger generation have neither heard these songs nor feel they can relate to them. They can relate to a love for cars, however. So how do organizers attract the younger crowd to events and make them feel welcome enough to stay?

Start with the music selection. Hire a local band that can play some great covers. Work with the DJ to spice up their playlist. Incorporating music from different decades and genres can appeal to the younger crowd. Consider songs such as “Low Rider,” “Fuel,” or “The Distance.” Or hits from movies popular among the younger generation, such as The Fast and the Furious.

You can’t go wrong attending some car shows—or all the shows—cars innately draw people in. So grab your kids and grandkids. Bring them to a show, then let the cars work their magic.

And with a killer playlist in the background, you’ll want to hang out for hours. What to wear? Blacktop Yacht Club has you covered, offering a wide selection of gear designed for maximum comfort and great styles perfect for any car enthusiast, young or old.
